Comatose

You can listen to my new song called Comatose from my home web site here: Comatose or from any of your favorite streaming platforms (Youtube
Spotify, Apple Music, etc) and on Pandora radio here: Comatose.

This one pays serious homage to the 80's.  I have been recently overdosing on the show "Stranger Things".  I have become enamored with the Duffy Brother's love of 80's synth's and 808 midi drum sounds.   I was determined to reproduce some of these sounds while also creating something unique, original and wholly my own.   This one deliberately (perhaps to a fault) starts out dripping in super midi four corner square "quantized" synth geekdom but hang in there folks.  I then slowly begin morphing, bending and yawing the frequencies like crazy adding in more and more organic pulse,  width and gnarly movement.   It made me swoon and smile to the rhythms and growls and kept me focused. The song took me over and soon sneaked out of a four cornered box and began to snake its way into a life force of its own.     As an independent and solo artist I get to create whatever I feel like.  This is one I just felt like.  Not sure how it will be heard by others but I was in heaven creating it.  The song "comatose" is now yours dear listener.  I hope you enjoy some of the new 80's sounds and textures I have now sent ringing like a bell through the cosmos.   As you progress through the song you will hear snippets of the "Charlie Brown Song" .  Don't ask me why but this rhythm just popped into my skull and wouldn’t let go. Later, if you listen close, you will hear the Close Encounters "contact" melody.  Why are they in the song?  They all surfaced in that dreamlike way like faint memories bubbling out of an 80's cauldron.?  My brain is full of endless surprises…some are scary too…..Shore It Up!  Are you Awake?  I hope I am.  It's ok Baby, It's alright Darling;  I'm Comatose.

Oh, that is just so 80's Dude!

Greetings!,  As many of you know, I am a child of the 80's.  I have recently been enjoying a show called Stranger Things which is set in the 80s where much of the clothes, conversation and artifacts they present throughout the show keep me very entertained. Yes, I am easily amused. The soundtrack to the show is very well done; tip of the hat to the music supervisor for this series.  I especially love the vibe of the theme song and the very, very 80s era use of midi drums and synths.  I attempted to emulate that vibe and feel in my latest song called?  I am still deciding on a title.  It will be called Comatose or Shore It Up. If I remember correctly, I went with that distinctive 808 drum thump, that rubbery synth bass sound and a very liberal use of side-chaining just for the fun of it. I also provided heavy dosage of that classic saw tooth synth sound with added sweeping filters across the landscape. This song was a blast to make and it will be hitting the airwaves very soon.  Stay tuned and thanks for dropping by my music cave for a peak into my music creation world....Dave

Dave's New Single Spotify Playlist

Spotify "officially" released my latest song creation called "Little League". There was a glitch during the distribution phase that took two extra weeks to resolve. Oh well. Here it is now. The song is provided below along with some other songs that caught my ear this week. The playlist is a mix of mostly super well known artists but also a smattering of artists who are less well known.

Here is a link to the playlist:  Spotify Playlist

During my musical journeying I have personally interacted with many DIY artists on Soundcloud and others who I am just good friends with. Some of them I feature here on this particular playlist along with the superstars. These folks have supported my music and encouraged me along the way. This makes them all Superstars in my book. Enjoy your weekend and take care of one another!

Little League Music Release!

Greetings!

I have just released an original song called "Little League".  Please join me for a lyric video Youtube premiere EVENT at 0900 a.m. today; Friday 10 APR 20.  That is like very close to now sport fans!  So you better be there or you will miss out on what billions of other eager fans from around the world will get to experience!

Click Here to go to the video that will air at exactly 0900 a.m.: Little League . At the heart of this song is the funky acoustic guitar and a dry session kick drum with samples called afro beat.  The rest of the song is really vocally driven.  I spent a lot of time trying to match the "sound" of the words and syllables to the rhythms as much as possible.  This took priority over the meaning of the phrases in some cases. I tweaked for meaning only if the change would still maintain the percussive/plosive vocal tones.  Needless to say I spent too much time looping through sections to capture a "best effect"   This is a short song  because it just felt right to end it when I did.    Enjoy and let me know what you think.  Also the instrumental/bridge section was kept fairly simple but has many subtle interesting add-ons if you listen closely.

Thank You

Dave

Little League

I plan to release a new original single called "Little League" on Friday, 10 APR 20. It's has some driving acoustic guitar rhythms with an upbeat tempo. Although I have recently completed a song that is about COVID-19, this particular song is NOT. I am tired of Mr. COVID and figure you are too. Stay safe friends and stay strong. Things will get better. Lyric snippet: "Can't write the next line cause you're all I see, I think this song's about you cause you're all I breathe"

Your Corners Curve Like Lemonade

My latest song is called Your Corners Curve Like Lemonade.   You are invited to join me for the song release premiering on Youtube at 10 am Saturday 15 FEB 2020.  The Youtube link is right here:   Your Corners Curve Like Lemonade.  I will also send out another post with the link tomorrow morning.  Thank You for sharing a moment with me!

Some song creation background for those who care to dig a little deeper:

The Chorus has a psychedelic vibe to it but with its own unique twists and turns.  I tried not to box myself into corners with my lyrics and used a very open ended process to my word smithing.  I felt know need to present you anything too "air-tight" in terms of story or arrangement.  This is what I love about song writing. I toss up ideas (the crazier the better) and see what happens.  Once I have a kaleidoscope of working pieces I gently mold them into forms that contain loose tendrils of cohesiveness and meaning but only just barely.  This is one of those song's I created with no preconceptions or creative borders and I just let my mind go where it wanted to.  Sometimes this works and sometimes it is a disaster.  In this case I arrived at something I liked enough to share with you.

Never mind that Dave, what is the song about?

It has something to do with the excruciating beauty of a sunrise.  It has something to do with love.  It has something to do with how quickly time moves forward.  It has something to do with how impermanent everything really is (including us).  It has something to do with how lucky we are to be the tiniest spark of a flame witnessing this miracle before us for the most minuscule parenthesis in time.  It has something to do with stepping out of my self imposed cage, and yet not running away and hiding.  It has something to do with staring this beautiful, wild catastrophe of existence right in the face and enjoying the ride.   Far Out Dude. Now go put your favorite tie dye shirt on, grab a cup a coffee and listen to my song : )!   Groovy Man…..Will Do!

May your corners curve like lemonade.  Have a great weekend!.

Thank You!

 Dave

Your Corners Curve Like Lemonade to release on 15 FEB 20

Hello!

I have a new song scheduled to be released on 15 FEB 20!

It's a bit "PSYCHEDELIC", it's a bit odd; it's a bit WTF question mark. If the lyrics make sense to you come and see me to explain them to me. It may have been created inside a cloud of haze and hallucination but I don't remember. I was experimenting with a big sub bass sound and things started to go crazy soon after. Be warned my friends! For your own safety please only listen to this song from inside a locked and padded room.?

In the meantime please visit my latest release called "Wild Overgrown Love" at davidhusted.com.

Oh...by the way; my new song is called "Your Corners Curve Like Lemonade" and I hope to send out some release notes about the song prior to the 15th drop date.  Stay Tuned and Thank You So Much!

Wild Overgrown Love

Wild Overgrown Love

By David Husted

A Henry Jamison song called Real Peach grabbed my attention and I decided to dissect it.  I do this often with songs and usually I lose interest or move on.  This particular song continued to pester my dreams because of the unique chord tones.   I think the draw was its deceivingly simple acoustic sound on the surface. I was in the mood to simplify.   However, surprise!, this song is also deceivingly complex.  Just beneath the primary guitar you'll note unique atmospheric pad textures, the reverb ebb and flow, the percussive accoutrements, the vocal harmonies, and the prime vocal intimacy.   This song was anything but simple in the end and I like a challenge.

So……I returned and decided to use some of its best pieces as an inspiration for my next song.   If you listen to both songs back to back you will probably NOT hear similarities on the surface because as my song grew it diverged pretty widely from the source material.  However, if you delve in a bit closer you will probably hear some congruent chord shapes (although a different key) and chord arrangement similarities.  Is this against the rules?  I'll let you decide.

I love to watch how an idea blooms into a completed project and takes on a character all its own.  My song was a complete failure relative to it's emulation of the Jamison song strong points (and that is probably for the best);  Yet!, A song was created, none the less, and I, of course, am willing to share the good, bad and ugly with you.   The song creation process on this one twisted along different and always interesting trails, dead ends and occasionally bumped up against beautiful vistas.  I personally hear its many flaws but it was time to let it fly away.  Enjoy!

May your unrelenting, relent; may your uncomprehending, comprehend and may you  dance with bewilderment.

Peace and Happy New Year!

Sagarmatha Preview

I create; to feel; a storyline; a movie; a score.

Sagarmatha anchors this song. The cradle and its peak; the point of no return;  a movie;  streamed across my mind.

Evolving drums; different color's hit and bit; cracking.  Complex sound design; an avalanche.  Tibetan horns; a lonely pull; up the lines; towards mystery; your journey.

Find a sherpa; climb a mountain.  ཞི་བདེ

A TELEGRAM FROM ALIENS

Greetings Earthlings,

Here is David Husted's latest original song called "A Telegram from Aliens".

Aliens from outer space may be watching your planet and determining whether you are collectively sane or insane and deciding if this planet should be saved or annihilated.

I am pretty sure you know which way the scales are currently tipping but give Dave's song a spin to find out more late breaking news on this topic at this link: "A Telegram from Aliens".

ECHO CHAMBER

I am back with a new musical offering.  This song is called Echo Chamber.  It is edgy and unique.

Here is a link to the Music Video: ECHO CHAMBER

We must listen beyond humanities incessant noise and cruelty for that quiet space between the echo where courage, strength and good-will bubble just below the surface ready to rise. A world cacophony rendered mute by a love so bright you can't help but be thawed and tempered in her slow alchemical, warming embrace.

This song speaks for itself and conveys what I feel at this particular moment in history.

Do Not Despair My Friends and Never Give Up

Peace

GROUND ZERO

How is it Going;

This song "Ground Zero" is the final song on my new album "Perfect Storm" released in May 18.  This whole package was created in a a little over one years time and I enjoyed every step of the process along the way.   This particular song was arranged after I listened very carefully to music I currently like already out there in the world.  As I listened, I methodically picked apart the structure of some of my favorites (deep listening).   I then, very carefully, focused on some of the sound tones and effects I liked in certain songs selected.  I  attempted to emulate and construct some of the sounds via synth design techniques and a little bit of sampling.  I could go into a lot more detail but I will not bore you.  Again, the most important thing is the "song" itself; melodies, lyrics  and rhythms.   Enjoy the music friends and thank you for listening.

My posts have been few and far between but this usually means my head is deep under the hood creating or mixing new stuff And that is exactly what has been going on over the last several months.  Recently, I worked on a new song with old friends.  This song is called "The Moment That Doesn't Exist" and was created and recorded in one day by Alan Schwartz, Ed Bejzak, Bill O'Driscoll and myself.  Yes, you heard that right; it was created in one day.  I am hopeful the song will be released over the next several months.  I will provide a link to wherever the group "The Getup" decides to post it. This song will also be be available via most streaming services; so stay tuned.

Since I formally released the album "Perfect Storm" to the world, you can now also access the album via most of the major song streaming services.  I personally tend to use Spotify so here is a link to that site as well:  Spotify Link.

You can also check out my SoundCloud home.  SoundCloud is probably my most "trafficked" area at this point.  If you decide to check out my music on this site I would be honored if you would follow me. Here is the link: "SoundCloud".  If you ever have any problems accessing any of my music please let me know and I will attempt to correct the issue right away.

BE ALL YOU

How is it Going!

My latest song is called “BE ALL YOU”.  Here a little bit about how I created it.  I became curious about the arrangement development and transition process that different artist use during the course of a song.  The main question I was dealing with was what are the subtle things a composer does to keep the song interesting throughout the entire song arrangement?

Human Beings like repetition but not duplication.  What I mean is that we like to grab hold of a catchy melody or rhythm and desire coming back to it a couple of times throughout a song. However, we notice when it’s an exact copy of something we have heard earlier in the song (we are very smart creatures).  I have been guilty of copying an earlier verse or chorus and plopping it note for note down later in the song…DON”T DO THIS.   It is important to add something new, different and exciting as the song progresses.   Give the listener something new every step of the way.   During this song I learned from other artists who are very good at this and tried to emulate some of there techniques.

I continued my study of sampling during this latest musical project.  What better genre than Electronic Dance Music (EDM) to showcase the technology.  This song is called “Be All You” which rolled off the tongue so easy and blended so well with my particular groove established early on in the song.  As is typical with EDM you will hear plenty of tension building synthesizer magic teamed up with EDM traditional “four to the floor” kicks.  This partnership often ending in pregnant pauses or nail biting drum fills foreshadowing what is famously known in EDM as the “Drop” where all that tension explodes into an epic Chorus eruption.

I used software known as Kontakt for the sampling.  There is a lot under the “hood” here and I have much to learn.  I used my own voice as the experimental fodder and basically split it up into slices and mapped them to my keyboard keys.  Then, via special algorithms in the software, essentially “time stretched” my voice to my songs own tempo.   This process maintained the rhythmic integrity to my voice slices despite the pitch changes (remember; typically if you bring something up in frequency it wants to play faster .....the chipmunk voice effect….I did not want that).   You can here examples of this “vocoder” like effect sprinkled throughout the song.  What fun.

SO who cares about all this technical crap anyway.  They key is that the song has to hold up on its own and actually be GOOD.  I believe I have achieved that as I noticed I want to dance when I listen to it.  You will have to decide for yourself ; )   Thanks Again for listening and please enjoy my latest "all original" musical plunge.

Thanks for allowing me to share my music creation process with you and hope this inspires you to create something new yourself.

Dave

LAUGH SEURAT

Hello Once Again,

My new song is called Laugh Seurat.  Here is the journey that led to such a strange song title.  I, at times, receive “instruments” from innovative artists for FREE. On occasion, this arrival occurs at the same point I am deep in the throes and messiness of music creation.

Several weeks ago I received a strange instrument called Seurat Midi developed by Jason Grier (pictured above). He has freely allowed the use of his samples and instrument to the general public. “Demonstration Disc is a new album by Jason Grier. It’s also a collection of over 1800 samples and generative Ableton Live music tools which Grier spent the past four years carving, cutting and coding from studio recordings of acoustic and electronic instruments, field recordings, found sounds and more. As part of the album’s release, Grier is making the entire project available as a free download. He has even provided tutorials and has expansion packs planned, making this a unique, open source project that will continue to evolve.”(1)

I actually, to this day, don’t really understand how the instrument works or its potential.  However,  being a certified tech geek I did horse around with it a bit.  This instrument essentially creates patterns from chaos using any natural sound as a starting point.  I chose an alto saxophone to test the waters. It created a random pattern you can hear in the bridge of the song.  It reminds me of sounds you might hear as an orchestra begins its tuning process.  I included it in my song only because this instrument was the creative spark that initially propelled the song forward out of oblivion. You can here it very briefly in the bridge for a short moment.  I edited most of it out.   Like I said, it was the creative spark, NOT a center piece in the song AND I am most likely using the instrument totally wrong. Oh Well.

Jason Grier called his instrument Seurat Midi in homage to Georges-Pierre Seurat.  This, of course, made me very curious about Mr. Seurat.  I found out he is a “……French post-impressionist painter and draftsman. He is noted for his innovative use of drawing media and for devising the painting techniques known as chromoluminarism  and pointillism.”(2) This art is best looked at as opposed to discussed.  I thought it was very cool and was very fun to experience but lets move onward.

As I developed my song and lyrics a recurring theme of “crazy laugh of madness” kept percolating to the top of my creative meanderings and musical  sculpting.  I guess you can now see where this is going.  At the end I was left with a finished song and a decision to make regarding a title for the song.  I decided on:

LAUGH SEURAT

Thank You for spending a moment with me I hope you enjoy my latest song. Have a Fantastic Week and Happy Holidays!

RAISE THEM UP

RAISE THEM UP

Hello;  I am back once again with a new song.  This one was a blast to create and I learned  some new creation and mixing techniques in the process.

Here is  a little bit about the song structure.  I had a strong desire to build a song around a more complex chord structure. I avoided the standard whole chord triads and challenged myself.  The patterns I came up with are harder to play, however, I feel the chord structure is more satisfying in the long run. The particular chords I landed on provide a sense of tension and release that fit in with my unsettled emotions better.

Here are the chords I chose:

Gmaj7;    Fsus2-9;   Cmaj7;  A7;   C;  BbMaj7;    G4+

I loved the the G4+ because our ears want that last chord to point us "home" and this chord just refused to cooperate.  That, my friends, is where the magic happens.  It springs up in the nooks and crannies of space, rhythm and tension.  I hear plenty of areas where I could improve the mix but I have learned that time is short and, at some point, one must move onward.

I am never sure what any of my songs are really about but I think facing demons, overcoming challenge, and coming together get you in the ball park.  Things are way to fractured in the world today.

Here's to You; Here's to Us

Dave

DOORS

Friends,   My latest song is called DOORS. I went for something more "cinematic" sounding on this one.  I think the textures and the percussion work together to accomplish that goal.  Let me know what you think.  It was very, very fun to create.  Thank you for listening to my latest song and watching my first "feature film" called DOORS (ok...maybe that's a stretch).

Dave

MOCKING BIRD

Friends,

It all began with small tendrils of a verse melody repeating endlessly through my mind. Here is a snippet of the first source material.  { Mocking Bird Verse Snippet}.  That distinctive tone that stands out on top is a synth sound called "Swaggering Around". I liked it. It is a major anchor throughout the song.  It does not sound like much on its own but you have to use your imagination in this process.

I played around with this pattern for several frustrating weeks (this is typical of my creation process...a lot of time in a sort of limbo land of uncertainty).   The creation process ALWAYS  starts slow and tentative.  It seems I sometimes forget everything I have learned and I get stuck in a land of "small" mind. Nothing sounds fresh. In this case my lack of progress forced me to move on to another song project altogether, at least for awhile.

I reluctantly (at first) returned to the song.   I decided to piece together two song ideas.  Here is the second change that inspired me to keep moving forward: {Mocking Bird Chorus Snippet}  This pattern found a home as my chorus or perhaps it's really a song bridge ..not sure.   You see…it is a chorus that never repeats.  It is only played once the entire song.

The song came alive again for me when I found some free time to play with the melody and adding interesting voice harmonies.  I spent a huge amount of time just humming non sensical words at the rhythm.  The words and phrases then began to emerge as I repeated the patterns many, many times and felt grooves that sat with the music right (at least to my ears).      I had a lot of fun taking harmonies way higher than my comfort zone in terms of register.  This particular harmony really got my juices flowing {Mocking Bird Harmony}.  After this is when the song took off and when all engines start firing for me. This is when I go into a sort of hyperdrive of recording and laying down tracks.    The final stage is mixing and pre-mastering which is a process I wish I had more expertise at but that I love learning about and improving at.

As an aside; I received some free samples from an artist named Kenny Segal  (thank you Kenny) and decided to use them in this song but sparingly.  They are far down in the mix and not "musical" at all.  They give the the song extra sheen, body and character by adding strange percussive breathy sounds (whale-like) and other reverberish oddities.  Probably hard to hear but I know they are present in the mix ; ).

The guitarish sounding patterns, echoes and synth buildups layer together to give the song a dream-like character that is hard for me to describe but I guess I don’t have to…just go and listen to the music. I will release it next week so stay tuned.

Thanks and I hope all is well with you.

FALLING OFF MY EDGES

New Song:  FALLING OFF MY EDGES

I decided to change up my creative approach on this project.  By this I mean I began listening to Electronic Dance Music (EDM) for inspiration.  This got the juices flowing as it is not my traditional cup of tea.

I started with a simple but thick steady kick thud and then experimented with percussive synth rhythms until one clicked. This took several weekends of tinkering time to settle on. I then built the rest of the song around that center of gravity.  This song is synth heavy and percussive as one might expect with EDM.

I used my outboard TC Helicon Voice Live 2 to create "harmonic" layers to my singing.    I hope no one was outside walking their dog while I was doing this because to avoid music bleed I have to sing with the music playing through headphones.  My voice ain't great so I am sure that an outsider passing the house probably thought someone inside was dying a slow and horrible death.   However, listening to my "live" processed voice through headphones was fun beyond description.  The mix levels I had while singing were sitting real nice and conspired to allow me to really go crazy with experimentation while I endlessly looped parts of the song. Good thing my family wasn't home...they would surely have strangled me.

I hear flaws but I feel safe (I hope) sharing it amongst friends.  Perhaps I will revisit it in several months time and fix the rough edges.

Until then, I will continue "Falling Off My Edges".

Peace

Dave
