One Song's Journey

Eclipse – Episode Nine:  Vocals Part 1

Vocals can feel intimidating—especially if you’re shy about putting your voice front and center. Unlike other instruments, vocals don’t live in isolation; they thrive in the context of rhythm, instrumentation, and the “pocket” of the full arrangement. Still, for this episode I want to zero in on my vocal framework and share some of the choices I made along the way.

To do that, I’ve got to do the dreaded thing: solo the vocals. (Brace yourself!) Vocals rarely sound flattering on their own—especially to the performer—unless, of course, you’re Post Malone. But every music creator has to go there at some point in the mixing process, whether it’s for balance, panning, reverb, delay, or just clarity checks.

I’ll be the first to admit: vocals aren’t my strongest suit. But I love them. They’re the heart of a song, and I do the best I can with the vocal cords I was given. The rest? That’s where the magic of EQ, compression, layering, reverb, delay, and just a touch of tuning comes in to shape and elevate the sound.

C’est la vie—I lean on the tools, but the soul is all mine.

In the next episode I'll share a vocal take. Stay Tuned!
