Glide: The art of carving

About two years ago I finished a draft of a song called Glide and dropped it onto the simmer pile. Usually songs that get that far are pretty close to release shape for me.

This one wasn’t.

When I came back to it recently, I realized I wasn’t hearing what I hoped to hear. It felt too long, a little scattered, and parts of the lyrics weren’t landing. The vocal phrasing and rhythm also felt off to me — like I was pushing the words through the song instead of letting them ride with it.

So instead of pushing it across the finish line, I started carving.

I cut sections back, reshaped lyrics and melody, tightened the flow, and tried to uncover the song that felt buried inside the original draft. The heart stayed the same — but the path there changed.

Today I finished final mastering.

Glide should arrive in about three weeks.

Here is my original write-up on this song at its birth over two years ago now..wow.
