Word of the Day: Tchotchke

Words, at times, randomly strike me as interesting, captivating or curious. Sometimes I pin them here if I am so inclined, which I was, as I sit here on a very hot, humid morning with a cup of coffee in my hand contemplating.

A "tchotchke" ( pronounced CHAWCH-kee) is a Yiddish word that refers to a small decorative item or trinket. It can mean:

  • knickknacksouvenir, or bauble — something decorative but not particularly valuable.
  • Sometimes used slightly dismissively to describe clutter or cheap giveaways, like promotional swag.
