Quote of the Week: Gandhi

Journalist: What do you think of Western civilization?
Gandhi: I think it would be a good idea.

—is one of the most famous attributed quotes associated with Mahatma Gandhi, but it’s very likely apocryphal or at least heavily paraphrased rather than a verified verbatim statement.

What it means

The joke works on irony:

The journalist’s question assumes “Western civilization” is a clearly existing moral or cultural achievement.

Gandhi’s reply flips that assumption: it suggests that what the West calls “civilization” is not actually living up to its name.

So the punchline implies: if you look at colonialism, war, inequality, and imperial power, “civilization” is still more aspiration than reality.
