Most worthwhile things don't reveal themselves the first time around.
Some songs grab you immediately.
Others take their time.
That first listen is spent chasing the obvious—the hook, the chorus, the clever lyric. But after a few spins, something shifts. You stop asking, Do I like this? and start wondering, What is this song trying to tell me?
If it's the right song, there's an intangible quality that keeps pulling you back.
Life seems to work the same way.
Some of the biggest changes in my life haven't come from discovering something new. They've come from returning.
Returning to an old song.
Returning to a book that suddenly made sense.
Returning to a lesson I thought I'd already learned.
Time has a funny way of rewriting the listener more than the song.
The notes stay the same.
We don't.
I was thinking about all this tonight as I slipped back into songwriting mode.
Wish me luck.
Have a sweet night,
Dave
