I have at times ruminated on my music making adventures and wondered why I do it.
Cons
- Takes a great deal of time and effort for relatively low payback financially. (I now hear Jeff Spicoli's voice in Fast Times at Ridgemont High saying "dude, it is not about the money bro…..it's about the art ….bud…what's your problem…right?).
- Can create anguish when there is a large gap between the sound you hear the sound you eventually end up with in reality.
- Imposter syndrome and other psychological barriers (this is my own personal problems, I will not go any deeper).
- When it starts to feel like work.
- Projected judgement (I care what you think to much).
- I am sure there are 10 other things but I'll stop now
Pros
- Joy; yes; just the simple act of creating something in the moment brings me a level of joy that is hard to put into words.
- Tinkering around and learning. This is the engineer in me I guess; I love playing with the endless sonic instruments and sounds all connected to the Ableton Digital Area Work Station. It would take multiple lifetimes to become adept at them. I must balance this aspect of music against the creation process itself. They are different.
- Play; this helps me stay sane in a fully and I mean fully insane world.
- The social connections this craft opens to me. I am an introvert by nature…..music is a vehicle that connects me to friends and friends of friends.
- Confidence. I have created music in teeny, tiny baby steps over 12 years now. In that time I have created 8 albums. That amazes me. (pat myself on the back now).
- Ok; there are many more but I will stop now.

What's cooking?
I plan to release a new song in about 3 to 4 weeks. Timing is vague as I am so busy in life now and just do not know when I will be able to do all the finalizing.
The song I believe will be christened "Crow". It is my 9th single release since my last album. I often use that as my point in time to release an album. SO, I may do that to…not sure.
Crow is a type of song that you may put at the back of an album. I really like it but it is not a traditional rock/pop/indie track. It is a bit more "eclectic". I created the track simply playing around with sounds. I believe I was watching a show called Sandman at the time of it's inception. Morpheus — also known as Dream — was the central character in The Sandman. Matthew, voiced by Patton Oswalt was Morpheus's loyal raven and messenger. At the time, I must have thought it was a Crow and/or the Crow theme came up in a podcast I was watching called This Jungian Life. It focuses on Jungian/depth psychology and has three hosts — Lisa Marchiano, Deborah Stewart, and Joseph Lee. This is where I think the Halloween vibe comes in and why this may be better released in October but why wait. It would be good to get it playlisted on a Halloween playlist so please consider it.
I am drinking a very good Founders "Dirty Bastard" as I write this and realize I have probably gone on way to long. If you stuck with me this whole way…a deep bow of gratitude to you my friend. Thank You.
Sincerely
Dave
