Eclipse
Episode Four
Listening to the song Chemical you will first notice a simple acoustic arpeggiated pattern with bass entry soon after. This pattern anchors the song and is a technique artist use often to introduce music. Post Malone then begins a very understated quiet verse (instrumentation minimal). The verse depends on the vocals to capture the listener. Post Malone's unique and excellent vocal delivery is able to do this easily. I knew I would NOT be able to do this easily for my particular song but I chose to stick with this reference anyway ; ). What can I say, I like to take risks.
Aside Note: I usually have around three songs percolating to the top prior to down-selecting "the" reference track. I weigh all the pros and cons of each track. Big factors are my level of enthusiasm for the track, it's complexity and my ability to translate what I am hearing into a stand-out, unique song. This song shouted to me and kept returning despite the vocal hurdles I knew I would be facing. I chose it.
I have found if enthusiasm for a song is luke-warm I often deviate and pick a new one before I complete the project. This is counter-productive. In other words, I do not STICK with the project I originally committed to and/or do not move forward with vigor. This can risk the project "dying on the vine".
See you in the Next Episode.
